I am currently a junior at Utah State University studying Journalism
and Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. I recently graduated
from Brigham Young University – Idaho with an associate’s degree in
Communication.
During my time at BYU-Idaho, I had the opportunity to join the ICOMM
Student Media Agency Team. Through my many experiences in this organization, I
learned valuable skills such as: writing, organization, communication, team
work, and dedication. One of my assignments consisted of organizing and running
a booth to represent ICOMM at the 2010 Teton Dam Marathon. I was also able to
write press releases for the music department which were printed in The Scroll,
BYU-Idaho’s school news paper. I had the
opportunity to work with a team on promotional ideas for Henry J. Eyring’s book,
Major Decisions, targeting the
southeast region of Idaho. These experiences
helped me gain experience in public relations and expand my knowledge of career
opportunities within the field.
I recently finished an internship with Deseret Book Publishing’s
marketing team in Salt Lake City. Starting as a part time intern it was my
responsibility to assist the publicist in writing press releases, searching for
and contacting publicity around the country and assisting in event planning. I
was then asked to stay for another semester as a full time intern to take part
in the planning and execution of corporate conventions, book tours, and author
relation events while continuing my work in publicity. From my experience at
Deseret Book I learned how to spread the high-standing company image through writing
and positive publicity as well as forming relationships with various contacts
around the country.
I plan to find a job in the Public Relations field after graduation
which will be in the spring of 2013. The included writing samples, pictures,
and experiences are a sample of what I have gained through my work in public relations.
